Buying surplus other: what to know

The catch-all: tools, scaffolding, job-site leftovers, appliances, and the things that fit no category but came off a real project. The checks here are universal: the ones that apply to everything on the site apply doubly where there is no category norm to lean on.

Check before you buy

• Ask for a photo with something familiar in it

  a garbage can, a tape measure, a doorway. Scale is the most common surprise at pickup, in both directions.

• Ask what job it came from

  the story checks itself. Material from a described project comes with context; material with no story deserves a closer look.

• Test anything with a cord or a battery

  on the spot, before money moves. A seller with working gear will not mind; a seller who minds has answered the question.

• Agree on all-or-nothing versus partial up front

  the listing says whether a seller will split a lot. Deciding at the tailgate is how both sides leave annoyed.
