Check before you buy
Bring a magnet and a tape
the magnet sorts steel from stainless and aluminum in one second, and drops are priced by size, so measure rather than trust the label on the rack.
Judge rust by depth, not coverage
orange surface bloom wire-brushes off and welds fine. Pitting and flaking scale mean lost thickness, which matters on anything structural.
Check tube and pipe ends
a crushed or ovaled end will not take a fitting or a clean weld joint. The middle of the stick is usually fine; the ends tell the story.
Ask what alloy it is, and accept 'unknown'
mystery steel is fine for brackets and gates. For anything load-critical or machined, unknown alloy is the honest dealbreaker.
