Check before you buy
Buy fittings unused only
a crimped PEX fitting or a sweated copper elbow is single-use. Look for pristine ends: no crimp marks, no solder discoloration.
Check the print line on PEX and confirm the type
the jacket states type, size and ratings. PEX that lived in sunlight degrades; faded print on a chalky coil is the warning.
For water heaters, read the serial number
the manufacture date is encoded there and tank warranties run from it, not from your install. A ten-year-old new-in-box tank is not new.
Know what your inspector expects
supply and drain work is permitted work in most cities. Materials are legal to buy anywhere; the install may need a licensed hand.
