Buying surplus electrical: what to know

Copper prices made wire the headline item here: part rolls of NM-B from wiring jobs, plus boxes, breakers, devices and the light fixtures that came down in remodels. Wire by the partial roll at surplus prices is a genuine saving on any project big enough to measure in feet.

Check before you buy

• Read the jacket printing for gauge and type

  14-gauge on a 20-amp circuit is a code violation and a heat problem. The jacket states gauge, conductor count and rating every foot.

• Match breakers to your panel brand exactly

  breakers are not universal. A breaker that physically snaps into the wrong panel is exactly the failure mode listing agencies warn about.

• Measure partial rolls before pricing them

  a 'mostly full' 250-foot roll is a guess. Weigh it or pull it, because wire runs short at the worst possible point in the wall.

• Skip anything with heat discoloration

  browned insulation on wire ends or a breaker with a darkened case has been hot. There is no discount that makes that worth it.
