Sell your surplus lumber before it warps in the yard
Leftover 2x4s, plywood, decking, and offcuts are the same wood that went into the job. List the pile for local pickup before the weather takes it. BuildTrader does not take a cut of a materials sale.
Who buys surplus lumber
DIYers, a framer short a few sticks, makers, and people building a garden bed. They need a count, a length, and an honest description of the wood. Short offcuts are fine. A lot of reuse centers turn short lengths away, so a labeled stack of them still has a buyer here.
What to list
Dimensions, length, count, species or treatment, and whether it is new or reclaimed. Reclaimed lumber is a real condition on the form, not a reason to call the boards new. If it is treated, say what the tag says it is rated for.
- Dimensions and length
- How many sticks, sheets, or boards
- Species, or the treatment tag
- New, or reclaimed
- Short offcuts, called that, not sold as full lengths
How to price it
The board-foot calculator, the plywood calculator, the deck board calculator, and the wall stud calculator describe the pile. The deck construction cost guide is what an installed deck runs per square foot, not the price of your 2x4s. Commodity prices include a softwood lumber benchmark in dollars per metric ton. That is wholesale direction, not a quote for a bunk of studs. Price the pickup.
One stack, one listing
Anyone can keep 3 listings up at a time for free. One listing for the whole stack counts as one of them. Splitting every board into its own post spends that allowance and makes the buyer do the bundling.
Pickup and loading
You do not have to deliver. If the pile needs a truck or a trailer, say so. Bundle it and strap it so it loads in one trip. The listing shows an approximate area. Share the exact spot in messages after you agree.
Common questions
Can I sell treated or reclaimed wood?
Yes. Say that it is treated, and say what the tag rates it for. Reclaimed boards should be listed as reclaimed, with photos of the faces and the ends. Do not describe either one as new.
What about nails?
Pull them, or say they are still in and show them in a photo. A buyer can decide. Do not describe a nailed pile as clean.
Do I need to deliver?
No. Lumber listings are local pickup. The buyer brings the truck.
