Leftover paint? Someone nearby needs exactly that color

A can of the right color saves a touch-up, a small room, a piece of furniture, or a coat of primer. List unopened or partly used paint, stain, or primer for local pickup. BuildTrader does not take a cut.

Why leftover paint is worth listing

Touch-ups fail when the color code is gone. A small room rarely justifies a new gallon of a custom mix. Furniture and primer for a flip use less than a job bought. The person who needs that can is matching a code, not shopping a brand aisle.

What to put on the listing

Photograph the label. Then write the fields a buyer cannot guess.

  • Brand
  • Color name or code
  • Sheen
  • How full the can is
  • Interior or exterior
  • How old it is, if you know

Check that it is still good

Open it. If it smells rotten, has separated and will not stir smooth, or the can froze and the lid bulged, it is not a listing. Do not pour it into an unlabeled jar. If it is not usable, follow your local disposal rules. The EPA's household hazardous waste page explains leftover paint as household hazardous waste. It is not a city directory. Your local program sets the actual drop-off.

Price it, or give it away

Set a price, or set it at zero if you want the cans gone. A price of zero is a real materials listing. Giving paint away here means a neighbor picks up a labeled can, which is the outlet when a reuse center will not take paint.

Pickup

The listing shows an approximate area only. Buyers take the cans themselves. You do not deliver, and you do not publish a street address.

Common questions

Can I list opened cans?

Yes, if the paint is still usable. Say how full the can is, and keep it in the original can with the label on. Opened or excess is a normal condition.

Is it legal to sell leftover paint?

Selling paint you own, in the original labeled can, is ordinary surplus. Lead paint, banned coatings, and anything the can says not to reuse are not listings. This is not legal advice. If you are unsure what is in the can, do not list it.

What if a reuse center will not take it?

Many reuse centers do not accept paint. A can that still stirs smooth, with the label on, is a listing here. If it has gone off, do not post it.
